Assam's job market looks different depending on where you stand. In Guwahati it is banks, hospitals, showrooms, coaching centres and the regional offices that run sales for the whole Northeast. Travel east to Dibrugarh, Tinsukia or Jorhat and the big employers are tea estates and oil companies. In the Barak Valley, Silchar's colleges, hospitals and wholesale trade do most of the hiring. This guide goes through each of these, the routes into government service, and what employers in the state usually expect from candidates.

Where the jobs are in Assam

Guwahati is the state's largest city and its main job market. Dispur, the capital, lies within it, so the Secretariat and most state directorates are here, along with the headquarters of Northeast Frontier Railway at Maligaon. Private hiring is strongest in banking and insurance, hospitals and diagnostics, schools and coaching, retail, hotels and warehousing. Many consumer goods, pharmaceutical and telecom companies manage their Northeast sales from Guwahati, which is why sales officer and area sales manager roles come up so often. IIT Guwahati and AIIMS Guwahati are just across the Brahmaputra, at North Guwahati and Changsari.

Upper Assam, meaning Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar and the towns between them, runs on tea and hydrocarbons. Oil India Limited has its field headquarters at Duliajan, ONGC works the fields around Sivasagar and Jorhat, and the state has refineries at Digboi, Numaligarh, Bongaigaon and Guwahati. Dibrugarh is also home to Assam Medical College and the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer plant at Lepetkata. Jorhat has Assam Agricultural University and the Tocklai tea research institute.

Silchar is the centre of the Barak Valley in the south. Assam University, NIT Silchar and Silchar Medical College make education and healthcare the steady employers, with trading, transport and banking alongside. Bengali is the everyday language of work here.

Elsewhere, Tezpur has Tezpur University and a large defence presence, Bongaigaon has its refinery and a railway workshop, and Nagaon is a busy trading and farming district. Jagiroad, in Morigaon district, is the site of Tata Electronics' semiconductor assembly and test plant, which has put electronics manufacturing on the state's job map.

Industries that hire the most

  • Tea. Assam grows more than half of India's tea. Estates and factories hire assistant managers, factory supervisors, welfare officers, accountants and field staff, and Guwahati's tea auction centre supports brokers, tasters and warehouse teams.
  • Oil, gas and petrochemicals. The large employers are public sector companies that recruit through their own notifications. Contractors and service companies around them hire technicians, fitters, drivers, safety officers and site supervisors.
  • Government and public sector. State departments, the police, schools, the railways and public sector banks are among the most sought-after employers in the state.
  • Healthcare. Medical colleges, district hospitals and a growing number of private hospitals in Guwahati hire nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and front-office staff.
  • Education. Schools, colleges, universities and coaching institutes hire teachers, counsellors and administrative staff across the state.
  • Sales, retail and logistics. Guwahati is the distribution point for much of the Northeast, so there is regular demand for sales staff, store staff, delivery partners and warehouse supervisors.
  • Tourism and hospitality. Kaziranga, Kamakhya, Majuli and the river itself bring visitors, and hotels, resorts and tour operators hire most heavily for the November to April season.
  • Handloom and silk. Sualkuchi's weavers and the muga and eri silk trade support a smaller but distinctive set of jobs in design, production and sales.

Government jobs in Assam

Most candidates in Assam prepare for at least one government examination, and it helps to know which body recruits for what.

  • The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) conducts the Combined Competitive Examination for the state civil services, and also recruits engineers, lecturers, doctors and other gazetted officers.
  • The State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) recruits constables and sub-inspectors for Assam Police, and conducts recruitment for some other uniformed services.
  • The Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) is the common route to Grade III and Grade IV posts across state departments.
  • Teaching posts in government schools generally require the Assam Teacher Eligibility Test, with recruitment handled by the elementary and secondary education directorates.
  • Central recruitment matters here too. Northeast Frontier Railway is headquartered in Guwahati, and SSC, banking and defence examinations all have centres in the state.

Many state notifications ask for proof of permanent residence in Assam and a valid Employment Exchange registration, so keep both ready. Apply only on the official website named in the notification, and check dates there. JobWalle does not publish examination dates or vacancy numbers, because they change and the official notice is the only reliable source.

What employers in Assam usually ask for

  • Language. Customer-facing roles in the Brahmaputra Valley usually expect Assamese. In the Barak Valley it is Bengali. Hindi and English are expected for sales, corporate and hospitality roles, and Bodo helps in the Bodoland districts.
  • Mobility. Field sales, service and delivery jobs generally need a two-wheeler and a valid licence, and territories can be large.
  • Willingness to relocate. Tea estate, oilfield and project jobs are often residential and far from the cities. Employers value candidates who say clearly that they are prepared for that.
  • Documents. Keep your HSLC and HS certificates, degree, identity proof and, for government posts, residence and Employment Exchange papers scanned and ready.

Pay and cost of living

We show a salary only when the employer states one, so you will see some listings marked as not disclosed. As a general pattern, private sector pay in Guwahati is lower than for the same role in Bengaluru, Delhi or Mumbai, and so are rent and daily costs. Public sector and oil company jobs follow their own published pay scales. When you compare offers, look at what is actually included: accommodation on a tea estate or in a company township can matter as much as the figure on the offer letter.

How to search for Assam jobs on JobWalle

Start with the city that suits you. Guwahati has the widest spread of roles, while Dibrugarh and Silchar have fewer openings but less competition for each. Use the experience filter if you are a fresher, and the work arrangement filter if you want remote work with an employer based outside the state. If nothing fits today, save a search and turn on a job alert, and we will email you when a matching job is published.

Staying safe

A genuine employer never asks a candidate to pay. That includes registration fees, security deposits, training charges and payments for a "confirmed" government post. No agent can arrange selection in an APSC, SLPRB or ADRE examination. If a listing on JobWalle asks you for money, use the report link on the job page and we will review it.
