Who recruits for Assam government jobs

• Assam Public Service Commission (APSC): the state civil services through the Combined Competitive Examination, and other gazetted and technical posts in state departments.
• State Level Recruitment Commissions for Class III and Class IV posts: the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE), a common route into Grade III and Grade IV posts across departments.
• State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB): constables and sub-inspectors in Assam Police, and uniformed posts in departments such as Fire and Emergency Services, Forest and Prisons.
• Education departments: teachers in elementary and secondary schools, usually after the Assam Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

Central government jobs located in Assam

Not every government job in Assam is a state government job. Central organisations with a large presence in the state recruit on their own or through national examinations.

• Northeast Frontier Railway, with headquarters at Maligaon in Guwahati
• Oil India Limited at Duliajan, Numaligarh Refinery, and the Indian Oil refineries at Guwahati, Digboi and Bongaigaon
• AIIMS Guwahati, IIT Guwahati, Tezpur University and Assam University, Silchar
• Banks, insurance companies and central departments, which fill posts in Assam through SSC, IBPS, RRB and their own notices

The conditions are different: central posts are open to candidates from across India and follow central pay scales and age limits.

Usual eligibility for Assam state government posts

Each notification sets its own conditions, but some appear again and again.

• Qualification runs from Class 8 or Class 10 for many Grade IV posts, through HSLC, HS and graduation for Grade III posts, to professional degrees for technical and gazetted posts.
• Most state posts have an upper age limit, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC/MOBC candidates, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen.
• Many posts are open only to permanent residents of Assam.
• Registration with an Employment Exchange in Assam is asked for in many Grade III and Grade IV recruitments.
• Knowledge of Assamese, or of Bengali or Bodo in the areas where they are official languages, is commonly required.
• A computer course certificate or a typing test is common for clerical posts.
